Coin scales made from buckets?

We are looking for plans to make a scale for VBS. I saw one once before. It’s a scale that has a bucket on each end and a light bulb. Whichever end has the most quarters of course goes lower and the light bulb lights. Does anyone know how to wire one of these? I can build it…its just wiring it so that the light goes on when its lower and off when its higher that I can’t figure out.

It probably has two mercury switches. A mercury switch is a glass tube with mercury inside, Inside, on one end is two contacts. Two wires are attached on the end where the contacts are. When the mercury tube is tilted so the mercury touches the contacts, the switch is said to be made. As the tube is tilted the other way, the mercury runs down hill and opens the contacts. So, in your case, when the contact is made, the light will come on.

These switches were common in very old thermostats. Whether they are still available, I don’t know. Try to search “mercury switches” on Google.

Edit; Today I had to take a long ride and to amuse myself, I reviewed your problem. All you have to do, is get a tube, paper straw or similar, a ball bearing that will roll inside the tube, and some solid #18 copper wire. Block off one end of the tube and on the other carve a cork or wooden dowel to fit snugly into the tube. Put the ball bearing in the tube. Drill a small hole in the center of the cork and push a short piece, about 6″ long, of the wire in till a small amount will protrude inside the tube. Bend a 90 degree bend on that little bit. Take another 6″ long piece of wire and place it next to the cork so that when you push the cork into the tube, that second wire will be captured between the cork and the side of the tube.

So, now, inside the tube you have, the steel ball, and two copper wires just inside the tube. When you tilt the tube down, the ball will not touch the wires, but when you tilt the tube up, the ball will touch the two wires thus allowing a voltage to pass from one wire to the other. Walla! A motion switch!

The rest of the electric circuit should come from a AA battery and flash light bulb.
