What is the difference between britain, england, great britain, and the United Kingdom?
I know England is England, but what exactly comprises “Britain”?
What about “Great Britain”? Finally, what all is in the United Kingdom? I have my suspicions about the correct answers, but need confirmation from someone who knows for sure.
Easiest way of thinking about it is this:
The British Isles are a group of islands that comprise of two sovereign states: The United Kingdom and The Republic of Ireland.
The United Kingdom is made up of:
England, Scotland and Wales, which are found on the island of Great Britain, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the island of Ireland.
The Republic of Ireland is made up of:
the rest (most) of the island of Ireland.
“Britain” is just a shortened form of “Great Britain” BUT (a bit confusingly) it can be used conversationally to refer to the whole UK (albeit contentiously in Northern Ireland).
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have devolved governments (a bit like US state governments). London is where the UK government is based (a bit like the US federal government). So Gordon Brown is PM of the entire UK, NOT England (he is of course a Scot).
There is ongoing debate about devolved government for England. At the moment all English legislation is passed in the UK parliament. This has proved controversial and there is an ongoing debate about how power should be devolved to England, leaving the UK parliament in London to concentrate soley on UK legislation.
